The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) took part in the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, held in Chicago from 29 May to 3 June. Organized by ASCO and the Association for Clinical Oncology, the event brought together more than 50,000 oncology professionals from over 150 countries.

The ASCO Annual Meeting is a leading international platform for presenting the latest developments in cancer research, clinical practice, and health policy. Covering all oncology subspecialties, the event supports the exchange of scientific knowledge and collaboration across disciplines. MPP’s participation reflected its ongoing work to improve access to essential medicines, including treatments for cancer, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The meeting provided an opportunity to connect with stakeholders in the oncology field and contribute to discussions on access and innovation in cancer care.

Giulia Segafredo presented on “Economic modelling to inform pricing for LMICs of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced PD-L1-high non-small cell lung cancer.” – more

Dr. Giulia Segafredo, Senior NCDs Access Manager at the Medicines Patent Pool (Geneva), and Dr. Dario Trapani, Medical Oncologist at the European Institute of Oncology (Milan), presented their research at ASCO 2025 in a discussion with ecancer. Their work focuses on improving access to PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors, a class of immunotherapy medicines used in cancer treatment, in low- and middle-income countries.

“We aim to understand how to achieve affordability and cost-effectiveness for these medicines — PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors in immunotherapy — in low- and middle-income countries,” says Dr. Segafredo.

The conversation highlights potential strategies to lower costs and expand access, including dose optimization, the use of biosimilars, and other approaches designed to improve the sustainability of cancer care in resource-limited settings.
