The Medicines Patent Pool’s patents and licences database, MedsPaL is a free resource that provides information on the intellectual property status of selected HIV, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and other patented essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries.
MedsPaL was launched in October 2016 focusing on medicines for three diseases: HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis. In December 2017, it was expanded to cover patented medicines of the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, such as those for the treatment of cancer. The database includes patent and licensing data covering over 6,800 national patent applications on 70 priority medicines (130+ formulations) in more than 110 low- and middle-income countries. We collaborate with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), the European Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization and several national patent offices around the world to collect information for the database.
