The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) is a United Nations-backed public health organisation working to increase access to, and facilitate the development of, life-saving medicines for low- and middle-income countries. Through its innovative business model, the MPP partners with civil society, governments, international organisations, industry, patient groups and other stakeholders, to prioritise and license needed medicines and pool intellectual property to encourage genetic manufacture and the development of new formulations. To date, the MPP has signed agreements with nine patent holders for thirteen HIV antiretrovirals, one HIV technology platform, three hepatitis C direct-acting antivirals and a tuberculosis treatment. The MPP was founded by Unitaid, which serves as sole funder for the MPP’s activities in HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis.
The MPP is now expanding its activities to cover Essential Medicines, which requires engagement with many new stakeholders, including potential funders.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

The Business Development Manager mainly supports the Head of Business Development in the scientific and regulatory duties, market intelligence and alliance management with licensors.

Main responsibilities include:

  1. Perform alliance and request management with licensors, ensuring the fulfilment of contractual obligations and maintenance of positive relationships:
    • Preparation of quarterly reporting obligations and other contractual duties;
    • Analyse and monitor post-licensing progress of generic drug manufacturers from product development through market launch and distribution to ensure low cost generics reach the market;
    • Act as focal point to answer any queries from licensors;
    • Oversee trade dress management requests.
  2. Serve as key internal Business Development scientific support person:
    • Responsible for managing MPP’s paediatric product development portfolio;
    • Monitor and serve as focus person for knowledge around paediatric treatment landscape;
    • Engage with external stakeholders: industry and non-profits to help further development of paediatric medicines;
    • Identify new potential technologies for paediatrics in therapy areas of MPP; and new potential partners for MPP, including new technologies;
    • Develop market forecasts for paediatrics in low- and middle-income countries in collaboration with third parties to advise generic development.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned by Head of Business Development, including but not limited to:
    • Manage, mine, and analyse data sets;
    • Responsible for regulatory affairs, including WHO-PQ, and in-country procedures;
    • Generate market intelligence containing scientific and commercial updates on existing licensors, targets, disease states;
    • Cross-functional collaboration with legal, operations, policy, communications where Business Development input is required to achieve MPP mission;
    • Maintaining relevant stakeholders, such as the Governance Board or Grantors, informed in all Business Development activities;
    • Attend external meetings relevant to responsibilities and functions.

The Business Development Manager should have:


  • Good understanding of the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory affairs environment (especially in LMICs);
  • Demonstrated analytical and quantitative modelling/forecasting skills;
  • Ability to mine data and information; creativity to work with non-traditional data sets and qualitative information;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Strategy development skills;
  • Understanding of the field of HIV (adults and paediatric) and viral Hepatitis (especially HCV), a plus;
  • Business Development experience as an asset;
  • Excellent professional writing skills.

 Education and Special Training:

  • Advanced university degree in science, public health, economics, finance, business administration or related field;
  • Formal training in modelling, forecasting and quantitative skills is desirable.

Experience (length and nature):

  • Between five and ten years’ relevant experience.

Use of Languages:

  • Native proficiency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of French is an asset.
